The British heavyweights clash in what could be a blockbuster main event at the O2 Arena, with ‘The Juggernaut’ under pressure.
Joyce (16-2, 15 KO) won his last fight on Mar. 16 following back-to-back stoppage losses to Zhilei Zhang. Chisora (34-13, 23 KO) has faced just about every notable heavyweight of the era and now he faces another one, as he comes in off of a win over Gerald Washington last August.
Joyce laboured to a victory against Kash Ali back in March as he began his steps across the comeback trail following dual defats to Zhilei ‘Big Bang’ Zhang.
Also on the card today Super bantamweights Dennis McCann and Ionut Baluta run it back for the vacant European title, after the two went to a draw last August; unbeaten super featherweights Ryan Garner and Archie Sharp meet in a 10-round bout; Raven Chapman faces Yohana Sarabia; heavyweight prospect Moses Itauma takes on veteran Mariusz Wach.
"This is a proper old-school heavyweight fight that seems to have been a long time in the making," Queensberry Promotions’ Frank Warren said via ESPN.
"Two top London heavies fighting it out for a place back at the top table promises to deliver a cracking scrap. The winner is right back in business, with no real place to go for the loser.”
Joyce (16-2) is a former British, Commonwealth, and European heavyweight champion. The 38-year-old won the interim WBO heavyweight title but lost it following two straight losses against Zhilei Zhang. He rebounded against Kash Ali in March.
Another defeat here would surely spell the end for him at the top level.
Chisora, meanwhile, has suggested this will indeed be his final professional fight after 48 bouts during a remarkable career.
Chisora was also victorious in his last bout, beating Gerald Washington by decision on the Anthony Joshua-Robert Helenius undercard last August.
But at 40 years old, Chisora may not have much left in the tank, and there have been calls for the Brit to retire.
The same can be said for 38-year-old Joe Joyce, who is still hoping to challenge for a world title before his career ends.
If Chisora loses, it would be the 14th of his career, while a third defeat for Joyce would completely spell the end of his world champion hopes.
Chisora (34-13) looks to return to title contention after losing against Tyson Fury in 2022 for the WBC heavyweight title, his third loss against Fury. “Del Boy” last fought a year ago, beating Gerald Washington. The 40-year-old is two years older than Joyce but believes his experience will play a factor in the fight.
The Joe Joyce vs. Derek Chisora main card airs at 2 p.m. ET. Joyce and Chisora should make their way to the ring around 5:30 p.m. ET, depending on how long the undercard fights last.
"Joe is not going to win," Chisora said via BBCcom. "He can train as much as he wants, but when it comes to the real grind of it, I'm more vicious than him. I fear no man. There's no feeling each other out in the first round - I'm going in."
